The 100

THE 100 (7.5/10)

Netflix Description: A century after Earth was devastated by a nuclear apocalypse, 100 space station residents are sent to the planet to determine whether it's habitable.

Bechdel test: 9/10
We got one! Not only does this show pass the test, but it does so with flying colours. This show with its large and diverse cast, includes a proportional number of female characters. Women in this show are well written and are commonly portrayed as; strong and intelligent leaders, hardened warriors, deceptive traitors, loyal friends, curious, head strong teenagers, and much more. Overall, the writing in this show appears to be doing right by women, actually portraying them as diverse people with their own unique goals and motivations. (instead of the rather unfortunately common, flat one dimensional female character who is given little development and is generally just used as a tool for sex appeal.)

Character development: 8/10
Characters in this show have had their entire world flipped upside down. From the first few episodes characters are forced to adapt to their new environment very quickly, or die. Certain characters change a lot more than others but the writing and the things which they are put through in order to cause such changes are generally worth it.

Diversity of characters: 7/10
This show has relatively decent diversity in regards to race and sexuality. However this opinion is mostly due to the fact that a lot of popular media either doesn't contain diversity, or else they do a really poor job of showing it.

Acting Skills: 7.5/10
This show has a large cast with a large range in acting skill. Overall the main characters of the show are generally good actors, enough to keep you in the story. Unfortunately, there are a couple actors who are not quite portraying people as much as they are portraying characters, but this is mostly made up for by the rest of the group.

Visual Presentation:  9/10
Outfits and uniforms occasionally tend to get a bit cluttered, but all in all, the sets, wardrobe, and special effects are really well done. The creators of this show put a lot of effort into creating unique and well developed environments. There is a lot done in this series to show how their world has simply continued to develop after the 'destruction' of earth, what with;
-the language (its basically an extreme version of English but every thing is slang and pronounced differently)
-the buildings and weapons (they have anything which was left after the world blew up)
-the landscapes (most things are either covered in rust or taken over by plants)
-as well as a plethora of other little details which help to make the setting of this show so interesting.

Story Line: 8/10
As with every story, there are times when some of the characters make ridiculous decisions. Occasionally there is also an episode which seems less than important to the advancement of the plot, but to look at the the show in general, the story is unique, the characters are interesting, the visuals are entertaining, and it will be exciting to see what is going to happen next. (season 3 is currently being updated an episode a week)

Let me know what you think about this show and if there is anything you would like me to review next!

  1. Yes, I would love to waste my time watching Netflix. I really like the introduction you've written, it definitely caught my attention. I, too, also watch The 100 and think its a great show. What made you want to continue watching the show?

    1. Being an artist, I love a show which can visually create a 'new world' and the characters to go with it! Also, I am fan of any shows which can represent minorities in a true (enough) way that it can help spread awareness.

  2. I'm very pleased you've included a section on diversity, it's something that often gets overlooked in reviews. I'm interested in hearing your criteria for diversity - are you focusing on racial and sexual diversity, or will you also be discussing more issues such as gender representation and disability in your reviews?
Additionally, I was hoping for a little more depth on critiquing acting ability. Which actors specifically would you accuse of playing as characters rather than people, and how exactly does this manifest in the show? Which actors are particularly convincing, and what makes their performances great?

    1. I'm hoping to cover as many areas of diversity as I can and will probably end up making sub categories for reviewing the representation of different groups.
I will also try to look in more depth as to the specifics of acting abilities in my next review (I may even go back and edit this one as well), and the only real reason those details were not originally included is because I myself am not an actor and I need to do more research into the different aspects and challenges of the area so as to be able to give a more accurate review.

  3. I love that you're looking at these shows in depth, instead of just saying "I liked it/ didn't like it" etc. You have evidence to back up your opinions and to me, that makes your conclusions sound.

  4. I really liked how you split the review up into sections! I have yet to watch The 100 but reading this blog I might just have to get into it. I myself am doing a TV blog so I am going to find it interesting on what shows you pick and I am excited to hear what you have to say about them. Do you think the story line can get a little bit to crazy at times and a little to unrealistic? Just because for me that can sometimes ruin a show for me.

    1. I'm so excited to read your blog! and yeah me too! that's one of my biggest pet peeves for shows. I think a lot of them just get so caught up in making things 'exciting' (so that more and more people will start watching), that they forget the focus of the actual plot and things just end up confusing and/or repetitive.

  5. I have some of my favorites on Netflix as well and while I do not watch The 100, this blog has encouraged me to try at least one episode (my son watches it - I think). I would like more specific details within your descriptors. Visually I find this blog to be very difficult to read.
