Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones (8/10)
(Season 1 is on Netflix and season 2 is in the works...)

Description:Following a tragic end to her brief superhero career, Jessica Jones tries to rebuild her life as a private investigator, dealing with cases involving people with remarkable abilities in New York City.

Bechdel Test: 9/10
This show is quite literally all about strong female characters (watch the show to understand the pun). The relationship between Jessica Jones and her best friend Trish Walker is one of my favourite parts of the show despite the occasional rough patches they go through.

Character Development: 7/10
Most of the character development in this show is relatively subtle and you will only really notice it by the end. Although I usually like to be able to see a character change and react while I'm watching a show, the way they pulled this off makes it a great show to re-watch in your spare time as you are likely to keep noticing new things which you might have missed before.

Diversity of characters/Representation of Minorities: 8/10
There are at least three characters who cannonly identify as LGBTQA+ as well as multiple characters who are POC. (The majority of whom are either the most interesting, or the most adorable characters in the show). Unfortunately there aren't any openly trans or gender queer characters in the first season.

(From left to right: Trash Lord, Trash Puppy)

Acting Skills: 8/10
The actors chosen for this show are all relatively well suited for the roles they play. This show has a lot of talent and handles a lot of difficult situations with realistic reactions from the characters involved. (Also David Tennant is one of my favourite actors for being able to flip from serious to charismatic to absolutely furious in a matter of seconds).

Visual Presentation: 7/10
This show actually looks pretty similar to another Netflix original, Daredevil which isn't really all that surprising seeing as how the two characters not only share a universe (marvel) but they actually live in the same city. Overall this show has some really tasteful lighting and makes great use of set design.

Story Line: 9/10
Something I like about this show is that there aren't really any filler episodes, every conversation either builds to the plot or to the characters. As much as I love the light and humorous tone given to other Marvel movies/shows, something I really enjoy about this show is its ability to portray a darker more psychological side to the hero-verse. There is still enough humor so as not to be depressing, but the jokes which are made are usually much darker then in some other products of the Marvel franchise.

Additional Comments: This show is really well put together and has some really great representation presented in several of the main characters. I am personally a huge fan of the Marvel franchise and how they have started this whole new trend of having multiple movies shows and clips all co-existing in the same 'universe'! It's really fun to see characters from this show and others, make reference to "the big green guy" or "The battle of New York"!!! I'm excited to see what they will be doing in season 2!

(I identify deeply with the trash lord)

Let me know what you think about this show and if there is anything you would like me to review next!

  1. I enjoy your blog very much! You did a really good job of telling the main idea of the show but at the same time not giving away to much information away to spoil it. This looks like an interesting show, great job Sydney!

  2. I have flipped past this show many times while browsing Netflix and I was always intrigued but never clicked on it because I'm not all that familiar with the Marvel universe (or DC for that matter). Do you think that I'd still be able to enjoy the show despite all the refernces that I might not get?

  3. The references made are basically little Easter eggs for anyone who is involved with the franchise but if you aren't, they are small and have no real effect on the plot of the show.
So yes, I would still recommend you to this show! its made to be enjoyable for everyone regardless!

  4. I don't have Netflix so I haven't heard or seen a lot of these shows. However I am always interested in what you have to say about them. This show seems pretty interesting, I just have one questions - is there a lot of action or is it more drama?

    1. honestly this show is a lot more directed towards the development of the plot through character life choices and figuring out whats going on, BUT there are several really neat action sequences (maybe about one or two per episode) which help keep the pacing of the show and help demonstrate each characters abilities.
